Artist Statement
The work in this exhibition is part of an ongoing series of drawings and paintings that draw upon my experiences of people and events around me. My studio is located in the city centre and I often witness people and situations that are oddly memorable or strike an emotional chord with me. I am interested in these moments when everyday life can suddenly appear strange and possessed of a heightened reality. I try to incorporate this everyday strangeness into my work, making notes and sketches as reminders of people and their actions. These form the starting point for my paintings, acting as the initial idea to expand upon using my own models and visual references. I often depict people in unguarded moments, in self-reflection and in motion, caught between destinations. While the figures in the paintings appear as specific individuals I am also aiming to reflect aspects of the human condition
