Philomena Pretsell

Artist Statement

On starting there’s often no clear plan but there’s always something to say. It’s strange that on completion I realise the statement is there. It’s what I’ve been thinking or had a passing thought about but hadn’t articulated the words until then.
There’s so much to say, to bring out, it seems.  Colour is at the heart of life, of living, for me.

Recognise the Fortnum’s pink paper? I bought some small foodstuffs for Christmas time this year. This paper was also used in their magazine advertisement - what a gorgeous pink!!! Especially next to the gold - mmmm.

Acrylics, sumi ink, wax crayon, graphite, charcoal, felt tips, are used on cartridge paper, cardboard or canvas so far.

I also use collected and saved found images, even used envelopes that have made me look twice. Vintage 50’s and 60’s extravagant home magazines (a pile from a friend and kept by for that ‘One Day’)
Sunday supplements, often populated with current high street trends for colour, texture or pattern and more, draw my eye. Kept for a few years they become useful graphic treasure.
More recently smart left-over (at the studio) architecture mags have provided structural shifts in the compositions.
