Bold colour, graphic lines and architectural forms create a body of work which
explores the theatrical dynamics of space. Shifts in perspective, detail and colour
transform logical motifs. In most works, geometric spatial configurations defy sense.
The clean lines and simplicity induce an illusion of order, yet simultaneously instigate
confusion. Geometric patterns incorporate symmetry and repetition, which invoke
feelings of orderliness, formality and accuracy. This is paired with evasive vanishing
points, conflicting angular shadows which punctuate spaces, and architectural devices
which hint at what lies beyond. The result reflects my interest in the contrived
‘realities’ of theatrical stage sets and model making, as both concepts deal with the
unique balance between reality and representation. Consequently, my work presents a
visual and psychological dynamic which creates a tension between reality and
abstraction, where aesthetics might overpower truth or logic in a space.
I am an artist currently based in Bedfordshire, having graduated from Edinburgh
college of art in June 2023. While in Edinburgh, I was a selected exhibiting artist in
multiple galleries in 2023, including the Nucleus Building Opening Exhibition and
event in June, the ‘Honey I Shrunk the Exhibition’ at Whitespace Gallery in March,
and ‘Saloon’ at the Embassy Gallery in February. I was delighted to receive the first
RSA Blackadder Houston Student Travel Award after the degree show. With this
award and funding, I was able to travel to Florence and Sienna from September to
November of 2023, which was instrumental in my development as an artist as I was
able to spend time expanding my research into sacred spaces and spaces configured as
spiritual zones.
